Story map: every story has a setting (where and when), characters (main and other), a problem and a solution. Here: Setting: a village house, at night. Main characters: the man and his wife. Other characters: the thief, Kotwal Rama. Problem: a thief breaks in. Solution: they call the kotwal by pretending to name their child.
Reading feelings from words: when the wife says "Ssssh! Listen!", she means be silent; she is listening carefully. When the kotwal says "Oh, Oh!" on seeing the hole, it shows surprise. When the thief thinks "Ah, at last, they've stopped their chatter!", he feels relief.
Was the kotwal good at his job? Yes: he was alert on his rounds, came running the moment he heard his name, and quickly understood what had happened. Can cleverness solve problems? This story says yes: staying calm and thinking quickly can be more powerful than strength.
Word meanings: wonder = a feeling of surprise; yard = an area outside a building; chatter = talk for a long time about unimportant things; instead = in place of; closely = carefully; perhaps = maybe.

One answer
Yes. For example, if you lose your way, staying calm, noticing landmarks and asking a shopkeeper or police officer for help is smarter than panicking.
