Supercells

Class 6 Maths · Chapter 3: Number Play · NCERT Ganita Prakash section 3.2

Learn

Some cells in this row are coloured. A cell is a supercell if its number is bigger than its neighbours. 845 is bigger than 312 and 467. 676 is bigger than 218 and 154. 154 sits at the end, so it has only one neighbour.

In a table with more rows, a cell's neighbours are the cells to its left, right, top and bottom.

The cell with the largest number is always a supercell. The cell with the smallest number never is.

To get as many supercells as possible, put big and small numbers one after the other: big, small, big, small …

Explore: be a supercell detective. Tap every supercell.

  1. Tap all the supercells in this row. Neighbours are the cells to the left and right.
  2. In this table, neighbours are left, right, top and bottom. Tap all the supercells.

Remember

  • A supercell's number is bigger than every neighbour (left, right, top, bottom).
  • The largest number is always a supercell; the smallest never is.

Quick check

In the row 312, 405, 287, 699, 150, which of these is a supercell?

  1. 312
  2. 405
  3. 287
  4. 150
Answer

405. 405 is bigger than both its neighbours, 312 and 287.

Think about it

Can you fill a row with different numbers so that there are no supercells?

One answer

No. The cell with the largest number is bigger than its neighbours, so there is always at least one supercell.
