Life Cycle of a Plant
Class 6 Science · Chapter 10: Living Creatures: Exploring their Characteristics · NCERT Curiosity section 10.4
Learn
Gauri plants a pumpkin seed in her school garden and keeps a diary. The seed germinates into a seedling, which grows into a young plant with many leaves. After some weeks, flowers appear.
Bees visit the flowers, and some flowers turn into fruits (pumpkins!) with seeds inside. When those seeds are sown, the cycle starts again. This repeating series of stages is the plant's life cycle.
Explore: put the stages in order.
- Order the life cycle of a plant.
Remember
- Plant life cycle: seed → seedling → young plant → flowering plant → fruit with seeds → seed.
- Seeds from the fruit start the cycle again.
Quick check
What comes right after the flower in a plant's life cycle?
- Fruit with seeds
- Seedling
- Seed only
- Root
Answer
Fruit with seeds. Flowers develop into fruits that carry seeds.
Think about it
Why is it important for some fruits to be left on plants or for seeds to be saved?
One answer
The seeds inside are needed to grow new plants. Without them, the life cycle would stop and there would be no next crop.
