Forests
Class 6 Science · Chapter 11: Nature's Treasures · NCERT Curiosity section 11.4
Learn
Forests are treasure houses! They give us wood, fruits, honey, gum, medicinal plants and fodder. They are homes for countless animals, birds and insects.
Forests also do quiet, important jobs: trees release oxygen, cool the air, help bring rain, and their roots hold the soil so that rain does not wash it away.
When forests are cut down, animals lose their homes, soil gets washed away and the area can become hotter and drier. That's why we celebrate tree-planting festivals like Van Mahotsav and protect forests in national parks.
Explore: what do forests give us?
- Sort each one.
Remember
- Forests give wood, food, medicines and homes for animals.
- Trees give oxygen, help bring rain and hold the soil; we must protect forests.
Quick check
How do trees help stop soil from washing away?
- Their roots hold the soil together
- They make the soil wet
- They eat the soil
- They push the soil away
Answer
Their roots hold the soil together. A web of roots binds the soil.
Think about it
If a hillside forest is cut down, what might happen during the next heavy rain?
One answer
Without roots to hold it, the soil could wash away down the hill, causing landslides and muddy rivers, and the hillside would lose its fertile soil.
