Happy Exploring!
Class 7 Science · Chapter 1: The Ever-Evolving World of Science · NCERT Curiosity section 1.1
Learn
In tests you are usually given questions and asked for answers. Let us turn that around! Great scientists don't just answer questions; they ask amazing ones. Remember: to be a wise person, you must be a "whys" person.
Question the answer: for the answer "Just make it half!", the question could be "How do we share a cake equally?", "My essay is too long", or "This won't fit in the envelope". One answer, many very different questions! There are no wrong questions, so let your imagination run.
Try it: "Just add some milk." Maybe: "My tea is too strong", or "How do I make this paint lighter?" or "The dough is too dry". Avoid obvious questions like "What is 32 + 10?" for the answer 42: the fun is in a curious, creative question about a real situation.
Throughout this book you will do experiments. Even when a result matches your guess, it may lead to new questions and more experiments. That is how science keeps evolving. Zoya's tip: keep a notebook of every "why?" you think of this year.
Explore: good questions.
- Sort the questions: which invite exploring?
Remember
- To think like a scientist, ask curious questions, not just answers.
- Even expected results can lead to new questions and experiments.
Quick check
Why is asking good questions important in science?
- questions lead to experiments and new discoveries
- questions are only for tests
- answers are more important than questions
- scientists never ask questions
Answer
questions lead to experiments and new discoveries. A good question is where every investigation begins.
Think about it
The answer is "Because the cat's teeth were crooked." Make up a curious question for it.
One answer
For example: "Why did the cat's bite marks on the ball look strange?" or "Why couldn't the cat chew its food properly?" Any creative question that fits works.
Practice
Practise with fresh questions at three levels (easy, medium, hard), some answered hands-on, with hints and worked answers. Get 4 of your last 5 right to finish the topic.
