Listen, Speak and Write: Staying Safe

Class 6 English · Chapter 3: Rama to the Rescue · NCERT Poorvi section pp. 32–35

Learn

Safety announcement: in the book, a security guard warns the neighbourhood about robberies. Key safety tips: lock doors and windows at night and when you go out; children should tell an adult at once about anything suspicious; don't talk to strangers or take things from them; and in an emergency, call 100 for the police (or 112, India's emergency number).

Speaking: practise saying contractions clearly: I'll, it's, don't, I'm, I'd, he's, that's, we'll, they're, you're, we're, what's, can't, won't, I've, wouldn't, shouldn't, didn't. Then discuss with a partner why safety matters, using phrases like "I think it's important because…", "I feel it's necessary as…".

Giving safety ideas: use phrases for suggestions: "I think they should…", "They must…", "How about…?", "It might be better to…". For example: "They must lock the doors at night." "How about putting a light outside the door?"

Writing: imagine you are the man in the story. The next day your neighbour asks what happened. Tell the story in your own words, answering when, where, what, how and why. Begin: "My wife and I were about to go to sleep last night when we heard someone…" Explore: find out whom to call if you see a fire (fire brigade, 101), someone hurt (ambulance, 108), a wounded animal (an animal helpline), a lost child or someone suspicious (police, 100 or 112).

Explore: who should you call?

  1. Sort each situation.

Remember

  • Stay safe: lock doors, tell an adult about anything suspicious, don't talk to strangers, call 100 or 112 in an emergency.
  • When reporting an event, answer when, where, what, how and why.
