Class 6 English · Chapter 6: The Chair · NCERT Poorvi section pp. 64–65

Learn

The chair is invisible and special (or magic). It was tricky to sit on because no one could see it! Grandpa called it special because it would reveal Mario's real friends.

Mario's character: he boasts at first, but he is also brave, determined and strong-willed: he wouldn't give up despite falling again and again. When he said "just a slight technical problem", he was covering his embarrassment and not admitting defeat.

Real friends vs companions: Guneet, Asma and Deepa held Mario up; many others made fun of his falls. A companion spends time with you; a real friend cares for you and helps you when things go wrong. "Friends for life" are friends who stay with you through good and bad times.

Was the test fair? It cleverly showed who cared, without anyone being told. Other ways to find real friends: notice who helps when you are ill or upset, who is happy for your success, and who tells you the truth kindly.
