Learn

Root words and suffixes: the word friendly is made of the root friend + the suffix -ly. A suffix is a group of letters added after a root word to make a new word. From the story: friend+ly, sudden+ly, talk+ing, carry+ing, call+ed, show+ed.

More suffixes: magic + -al = magical; care + -ful = careful; celebrate + -tion = celebration (the e drops!); laugh + -ed = laughed; wonder + -ful = wonderful; help + -ful = helpful; friend + -ship = friendship; courage + -ous = courageous. Watch for spelling changes.

Adjectives are words that describe the quality of a person or thing. "Mario, brave and determined, took the strange invisible chair." Words to describe Mario: brave, determined, strong-willed, boastful (at first), cheerful, lucky.

Adjective + noun pairs: brave soldier, clever plan, tasty peanuts, heavy rain, slight cold, true friends. Use them in sentences: "The brave soldier marched ahead." "We had a clever plan." In a story: "A happy boy found an old book full of amazing stories about magical adventures and colourful creatures."

  • A suffix is added after a root word: friend + ship = friendship; celebrate + tion = celebration.
