Community and Its Role

Class 6 Social Science · Chapter 9: Family and Community · NCERT Exploring Society: India and Beyond section 9.3

Learn

When heavy rain floods Aarav's street, neighbours open their homes to families on the ground floor. The local gurdwara runs a langar for everyone, a youth club collects clothes, and shopkeepers give away drinking water. In a few days, the street is cleaned up together.

A community is a group of people who share something: the place they live (a village, a neighbourhood), a language, a kind of work (like a fishing community), a faith, or an interest (like a sports club). Each of us belongs to many communities at once.

Communities play many roles. They help in hard times (floods, illness, loss), celebrate festivals and weddings together, look after shared places like ponds, parks and temples, and help settle small disputes. Traditions like the langar, community kitchens and village fairs show the spirit of sharing.

An old Sanskrit saying, "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam", means "the whole world is one family". It asks us to extend the care we feel for our family to our community, and then to all people and living beings.
