Why Democracy Matters

Class 7 Social Science · Chapter 9: From the Rulers to the Ruled: Types of Governments · NCERT Exploring Society: India and Beyond section 9.5

Learn

Comparing forms of government helps us see why most countries prefer democracy. Only democracy combines universal adult franchise, equality among citizens, freedom of speech, separation of powers and the aim of well-being for all. In a genuine democracy you can choose what to say, wear and believe, as long as you do not harm others' rights. If a government fails, people can change it at the next election, keeping a constant check on its work. More than half the world's countries are democracies.

But democracies have problems too: corruption, big wealth gaps, too much control by a few over institutions, threats to the judiciary's independence, and manipulation of information. Citizens must stay vigilant: vote thoughtfully, check facts, speak up and take part. Zoya's class finally elects its student committee by secret ballot, and the new members promise a monthly report to every class.
