Why Physical Infrastructure Matters
Class 7 Social Science · Chapter 19: Infrastructure: Engine of India's Development · NCERT Exploring Society: India and Beyond section 19.1
Learn
Imagine waking up to find no roads, no buses, no phone signal, no lights and a dry tap. That is life without physical infrastructure, the network of built structures that keeps villages and cities running: transport (roads, bridges, railways, ports, airports), utilities (electricity and water pipelines), communication (telephone lines, towers, the internet) and energy (wind farms, solar parks, oil and gas pipelines).
Kabir's uncle grows tomatoes near Nashik. Canals and electric pumps water his crop; good roads let trucks carry it to the city; cold storage keeps it fresh; and his phone tells him the best mandi prices. When Kabir travels home, he drives over a bridge, takes the metro past traffic, rides a train past fields and finishes by bus and autorickshaw. Each piece fits like part of a puzzle. Infrastructure links producers to markets, supports tourism, reaches remote areas, helps in floods and earthquakes, and strengthens national security by giving the armed forces access to all terrain.
Explore: which kind of infrastructure?
- Sort each structure.
Remember
- Physical infrastructure includes transport, utilities, communication and energy networks.
- Its parts work together to move people and goods safely and on time.
Quick check
How does cold storage help a tomato farmer?
- it keeps produce fresh until it reaches buyers
- it waters the field
- it ploughs the land
- it sets the price
Answer
it keeps produce fresh until it reaches buyers. Without it, much produce would rot before sale.
Think about it
What happens to a village when a new highway is built nearby?
One answer
Farmers reach markets faster, new shops and jobs appear, and hospitals are closer; but there may be more traffic, noise, accidents and loss of farmland.
